From Skeuomorphism to Flat Design: The Evolution of UI Design

How has UI design changed so dramatically over the last 15 years?

UI design evolution over the last 15 years:

  • Skeuomorphism (2007-2013): This design trend pioneered by Apple during Steve Jobs' era presented interfaces that mimicked real-world objects. Notepad apps resembled actual notebooks, calculators looked like physical calculators.
  • Flat Design (2013-2017): The flat design trend initiated by Microsoft with Windows 8 moved away from realism toward minimal, two-dimensional interfaces. Shadows were removed, colors became flattened.
  • Material Design (2014-Present): This approach developed by Google combined flat design with a sense of depth and motion, creating more dynamic interfaces.
  • Neumorphism/Soft UI (2020-Present): A modern interpretation of Skeuomorphism, creating designs with soft shadows and minimal color palettes that give a three-dimensional feel.

Today, we see hybrid versions of these trends. Regardless of the trend, those who prioritize user experience win.
