Empty State UX: How to Guide Users?

May 5, 2025 1 min read 41 People Read

Empty screens are one of the most overlooked yet powerful opportunities in UX design! Empty states occur when users haven't created content yet or when there are no results (empty search results, empty list views, new starts).

Four components for effective empty state design:

  • Explanatory text: Explain what happened and why it's empty
  • Guiding visual: Illustration depicting the situation and reflecting brand personality
  • Clear CTA: Distinct button defining the user's next step
  • Helpful information: Additional context or tips if necessary

Transform empty states into micro-tutorial moments that drive user action and communicate your product's value.
