Color Contrast and Accessibility in User Interfaces

May 5, 2025 1 min read 3 People Read

Color contrast isn't just about aesthetics; it's an accessibility issue!

Approximately 8% of the world's population experiences some form of color blindness. Additionally, elderly users may struggle to read low-contrast text.

According to WCAG 2.1 standards:

  • AA level: 4.5:1 contrast for normal text, 3:1 for large text
  • AAA level: 7:1 contrast for normal text, 4.5:1 for large text

Tools to check contrast ratios:

  • Contrast Checker: webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker
  • Design tool plugins: Stark, Contrast

An interface with high color contrast provides a better experience for all users and is vital for users with disabilities.
